Workshop: Introduction to interventions in MBT with conduct disorder

Svenja Taubner, professor, psykolog, psykoanalytiker. Universitet i Heidelberg, Tyskland.

Externalizing disorders, such as conduct disorder (CD), constitute some of the most challenging conditions to treat during adolescence. Evidence-based treatment concepts for CD are available particularly in the area of family-based interventions but are rather rare for older adolescence. For this reason, mentalization-based therapy (MBT) was adapted for CD. The program is based on the rational that adolescents with CD have difficulties in understanding others and generally in mental flexibility in relationships. They have also not come to know others as reliable sources of information and try to change thoughts and feelings in others through violence. The program is a combination of individual and family therapy as well as parent coaching, in which the modules can be individualized. The central aim is to improve the mentalization of young people in order to reduce aggressive behaviour, increase empathy and agency and improve communication within the family. The workshop will introduce the basic interventions and therapeutic stance by video examples and live role play.
